Corrosion resistance of graphite metal spiral wound gaskets

Graphite composite gaskets, also known as improved graphite gaskets or high-strength graphite gaskets, are gaskets made by compressing a combination of punched metal tooth plates or metal mesh plates and expanded graphite particles. They are generally cut from enhanced graphite sheets using gasket cutting equipment. Commonly used inner layer reinforcement materials include SS304, SS316, or tinplate.

 

With thicknesses ranging from 0.05 to 0.2mm, they come in various forms such as reinforced composite gaskets with punched plates, mesh plates, or flat plates. Graphite composite gaskets can be made into various circular and geometrically irregular shapes, such as water level gauge gaskets, cylinder gaskets, exhaust pipe gaskets, and ribbed heat exchanger gaskets.

 

According to requirements, high-strength graphite composite gaskets can be made with stainless steel edges. There are several methods, including standard graphite composite gaskets with inner or outer graphite composite wrappings. The commonly used edge material for graphite composite gaskets is 304 or 316L stainless steel. Functional characteristics include good corrosion resistance, high and low temperature resistance, radiation resistance, reduced rebound, and high toughness.

 

Stainless steel graphite composite gaskets have a lower preload than metal gaskets and metal spiral wound gaskets, and have less stringent requirements for flange surfaces, making them a cost-effective gasket option. If the wrapping method is chosen, it can maintain the excellent properties of the original graphite composite gasket, making installation and removal easy, difficult to damage, and capable of preventing the gasket from being eroded by materials and oxygen in the external air, thereby improving temperature and pressure resistance.

 

Application equipment includes sealing positions at flange connections, such as pipelines, gate valves, pumps, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, coolers, generators, air compressors, steam exhaust pipes, refrigerators, and more. They can replace asbestos rubber gaskets and iron-clad gaskets. Graphite composite gaskets offer great flexibility in processing size, and special specifications or various non-standard products can be customized according to customer requirements.
