Installation Regulations for 304 Metal Spiral Wound Gaskets

When selecting metal spiral wound gaskets, the gasket specifications are determined based on the flange specifications. Generally, the gasket specifications are chosen in conjunction with the flange specifications. Firstly, one should understand the working pressure of the sealing medium, the standard and type of the flange, and the required metal material. The structural type and pressure rating of the spiral wound gasket should also be selected. Then, based on the operating temperature and chemical corrosion characteristics of the sealing medium, suitable materials for the metal spiral wound gasket and non-metal packaging materials should be chosen. Consideration should be given to the corrosion resistance of both metal and non-metal materials. Corresponding gasket specifications should be selected according to the nominal diameter and structure of the flange, and the selected gasket should be marked according to the examples specified in the standard to finalize the selection. If it is a non-standard spiral wound gasket, it needs to be determined based on the metal and non-metal materials, followed by the structural thickness and overall thickness of the gasket. Factors to consider simultaneously include: sufficient gasket stress to ensure sealing and avoiding excessive reduction of the gasket. Custom installation structures (generally determined by the structural specifications of the two mating flanges), safety features for the installation of large gaskets, and the impact of non-standard gasket structures on the overall equipment structural costs, among others.

 

For the standard installation and use of metal spiral wound gaskets, the following precautions should be taken:

The sealing gasket and flange sealing surface should be cleaned and free of defects such as scratches, stains, or other imperfections that could affect the sealing performance of the connection.

 

The diameter of the sealing gasket should be smaller than the outer side of the flange sealing surface, and the inner diameter of the sealing gasket should be slightly larger than the inner diameter of the pipe. The lip should not extend into the container or pipeline to prevent fluid flow within the container or pipeline.

 

The gasket must be centered on the flange, which is particularly critical for shouldered flanges.

 

The installation of metal spiral wound gaskets with outer rings must ensure that the connecting bolts are tightened uniformly and symmetrically; however, once tightened, they may not reach the design value immediately. Generally, they should be tightened and loosened at least 2 to 3 times to ensure an even stress distribution across the gasket.

 

After the valve pipeline system has operated for one cycle, inspect and recalibrate the torque of the connecting bolts.

 

To ensure the service life of the gasket, do not apply liquid or metal-based anti-stick agents or lubricants.

 

If there is a leak in the pipeline, be sure to depressurize before replacing or adjusting the sealing gasket.
